The pain of disappearing
In their new piece, cie. toula limnaios venture into the realms of melancholy
Text: Johanna Withelm
How do we live our lives knowing that they will inevitably come to an end? With les égarés, the ones who have lost their way, cie. toula limnaios presents her new work, which is conceived as a choreographic essay dedicated to the pain of transience. The idea was inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s book of poems Les Fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil), published in 1857, an examination of the ugly and the bizarre borne by the mood of the end times and melancholy. Drawing on a deep sensitivity to the passing of time, the ensemble of eight dancers confronts what is probably one of mankind’s greatest challenges: understanding one’s own transience and the painful awareness that one day we will all disappear.
