Of Cracks and Meadows
Two works featuring an autobiographical approach by Grėtė Šmitaitė
Text: Johanna Withelm
As part of the neworks series, Grėtė Šmitaitė will be presenting two interrelated works, Cracks and Meadow, at ada Studio. In the first piece, Cracks, the choreographer and dancer, who was born in Lithuania, trained at the HZT Berlin and is now studying the art of clowning, examines the dystopia of being alone and explores the pain of imagining relationships but not living them. How is it possible to have a relationship that’s real? Meadow, on the other hand, is an attempt to dance the place where one’s grandfather was born before being taken away by the Soviet army at the age of ten. It’s his fear of love that was choreographed beforehand in Cracks. Ultimately, these dynamic pieces are a moving choreographic exploration of trauma, memory and intergenerational pain.
