Coalition of the independent scene

since 2012

Interdisciplinary action alliance to pool ideas and proposals for a new cultural policy.

The ZTB - Zeitgenössische Tanz Berlin e.V., partners of the TanzRaumBerlin network and Tanzbüro Berlin are partners of the Coalition of the Independent Scene as part of the speakers' group and as the first signatories.

In March 2012, the Coalition of the Independent Scene of all Arts was formed in Berlin to draw attention to the blatant misguided developments in Berlin's cultural budget, which jeopardize the substance of the much-vaunted and internationally celebrated creative Berlin. The Coalition of the Independent Arts brings together ideas and proposals developed by various networks, initiatives, groups and individuals for a new cultural policy.

Ten points for a new funding policy
On 12.11.2012, the Coalition of the Independent Scene presented a detailed 10-point program to the parliamentary groups in the House of Representatives. For the first time, it contains well-calculated and coordinated demands that are intended to finance new funding instruments that correspond to actual artistic practice and, above all, have a lasting effect. The central and fundamental demand of the Coalition of the Independent Scene is for minimum fees, as the current highly precarious working conditions of Berlin-based independent artists and cultural producers, which are based almost exclusively on self-exploitation, are no longer sustainable.

  1. Cultural promotion based on artistic practice. Emerging production structures require new funding instruments
  2. Guarantee of lower fee limits
  3. Fund for production support/ project-oriented visual arts grants
  4. Anchor positions
  5. District arts and culture funding
  6. Self-governing structures
  7. Cultural use of properties
  8. Solidarity principle and provision of institutional infrastructures: equity, transparency and subsidiarity
  9. Improving funding structures for literature
  10. Further structural proposals for the promotion of the independent scene

Additional funding required in total: 18.8 million euros per year

Further developments on the 10-point program, the current work of the Independent Scene Coalition and the contacts of the individual sectors can be found on the  homepage of the Coalition of the Independent Scene.
