Scarlet Red

The Zurich Dance Ensemble with a German Premiere at HAU
In a society that still condemns women who are open about their sexuality, the question must be asked: what would a woman in the 17th century have had to endure if she, like Hester Prynne in the novel The Scarlet Letter, had a child out of wedlock and was marked with a scarlet “A” on her chest? In Tambourines, choreographer and dancer Trajal Harrell, together with the Zurich Dance Ensemble, breathes new life into history and reflects on a time when women were oppressed by the arbitrary rules of colonial society. Using powerful dance and a thrilling production, the ensemble celebrates resistance, solidarity and the possibility of changing the future. (jw)
