Meryl Tankard’s Reinterpretation of Pina Bausch’s "Kontakthof" at the 2025 Theatertreffen

Pina Bausch’s piece Kontakthof, first performed in 1978, is one of the iconic and almost sacred works by which she once completely revolutionized dance theater. Meryl Tankard is now returning to Pina Bausch’s key work with her new interpretation Kontakthof – Echoes of ’78 – this time with dancers from the original cast, older by almost five decades. Tankard was one of the original members of the Kontakthof ensemble in 1978 and is now once again performing parts of the choreography with eight other members of the original company. In a moving dialogue with detailed video recordings from that time, the piece explores transience, memory and loss. Kontakthof – Echoes of ’78 is an attempt to reflect on aging and an intimate examination of time and one’s own history. (jw)
