Tools for Survival

Module for the development of production managers and dramaturges for the independent dance scene in Berlin.

Workshop Festival TOOLS FOR SURVIVAL

The Berlin dance scene is full of knowledge: Collectively and inventively, dance makers use the available resources. The two-day workshop festival TOOLS FOR SURVIVAL invites you to Uferstudios Berlin on June 21 and 22, 2025 and opens up a solidary space for exchange, practice and mutual support.

In peer-to-peer workshops, Berlin dance professionals will share their knowledge: on production issues, healthy working methods, financing, artistic strategies and much more. The festival is aimed at Berlin dance professionals and anyone who works in the independent dance scene or is interested in its structures. TOOLS FOR SURVIVAL is a collective space for thought and action. Here it becomes clear: knowledge that comes from practice can become the basis for long-term changes in the scene.

The festival is part of the project Empowering Dance and is organized by Tanzbüro Berlin in cooperation with ZTB e.V.

“Empowering Dance” is a project of Tanzbüro Berlin, supported by Zeitgenössischer Tanz Berlin e.V. The project is funded for the years 2023 to 2026 by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the State of Berlin, Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.

Despite the great need within the contemporary dance scene, the occupations of freelance production management and dance dramaturgy are still underdeveloped, and professionals often enter these fields through learning by doing: there are few opportunities for initial training or CPD. Conversely, many young artists do not know how to get in touch with experienced production managers or dramaturgs, or how important collaboration of this kind is for professional productions.

That is precisely where the tandem module comes in. Its aim is to support and bring together prospective production managers, dance dramaturgs and dancers/choreographers. Over a period of 6 months, the structured tandem program offers professional support and continuing professional development by experienced mentors from the fields of production management and dramaturgy.

The programme prepares budding production managers and dramaturgs for their potential duties, and enables them to work with artists to pinpoint the challenges of their chosen career and develop the best means of tackling them. The artists, meanwhile, gain a better understanding of their associates’ professions and why they need to be integrated into the overall production process. Ideally, this intensive collaboration will produce teams who will continue to work together outside the tandem programme.

Apart from the CPD programme, the Tanzbüro also organises regular Stammtisch round-table meetings four times a year, run by the artist Lea Moro, who also selects the themes discussed. These offer an opportunity for people to talk about current topics related to collaboration between artists, production managers and dramaturgs, and to network with current and former tandem participants.

Several times a year, the tandem Stammtisch offers the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with professional colleagues on current topics. The regulars' table will be moderated and designed by Tanzbüro Berlin.

If you have any topic requests, suggestions or questions, please let us know so that they can be discussed at the regulars' table.
