Sonstiges

Book release about 32 years of artistic work by Sasha Waltz & Guests

Release date: September 17, 2025

»To dance is to participate actively in the vibration of the universe« - Sasha Waltz

For over 30 years, the dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests has been touring internationally with great success, presenting contemporary choreographies and choreographed operas worldwide, developing site-specific »Dialogue« projects and implementing artistic-social projects. It is time for choreographer Sasha Waltz to look back and forward together with the people who have accompanied her on her journey. In a book that takes its time and offers readers new perspectives on her oeuvre. The 344-page book is published in English and German by Hatje Cantz and will be available internationally from 17 September. Pre-orders can already be placed.

As Sasha Waltz herself aptly describes, »an ensemble is a living archive.« But how does an ensemble remember? Beyond the mere chronology of events, the book focuses on an aspect of memory that guarantees the repeatability of dance: notation. Sasha Waltz's »scores« consist of fascinating terms that each describe individual choreographic figures. The book takes up 65 of these »codes« in the form of an encyclopaedic cabinet of curiosities and removes them from their original context. Through links to art history and commentary by guest contributors offering a wide range of perspectives, a creative reordering of Sasha Waltz's oeuvre emerges, bringing the scores to life once again in a new light.

Since 1993, Sasha Waltz and cultural entrepreneur Jochen Sandig have been realising their shared dream of a dance company as a constantly evolving artistic community in Berlin and internationally with many allies. The complete works of Sasha Waltz & Guests to date comprise over 80 productions, involving more than 300 artistic and academic »guests« from architecture, visual arts, choreography, design, film, literature, fashion, music, opera, philosophy, sociology, dance and theatre from over 30 countries.
