Dance and choreography have become largely conceptual, administrative and managerial practices in the past years. With the concept of the dancer as maker against the background of precarious working conditions, conceptualizing working methods, conceiving project plans, working out budgets, writing one’s emails and – last but not least – preparing applications became part of almost everyone ́s artistic practice in the field. Large part of the working processes in dance and choreography are no longer taking place in a common rehearsal space in the theater but at home desks or kitchen tables. An extended understanding of what dance and a dance maker are and the discursive quality of choreography, strangely tend to individualize the work of dancers and choreographers and bind them to home. Freelance project management and the pressure for the individual maker that goes along with it greatly affect a number of aspects in life and work that we care about: the presence of others, the exchange of ideas, working atmospheres, the reflection on artistic practices and personal confidence. The shared office is meant as a step to modify both, the working conditions as well as the mood.
Beyond the very practical or daily life effects, the loneliness of the kitchen table also reinforces parameters in artistic production that we thought to have a critical eye on already: individual authorship and the competition with ideas and knowledge. Not denying the de facto economic and artistic competition which we are in and which we cannot simply put away with good will, we nevertheless want to draft an understanding of artistic production that strives for collaboration and contextual working. This, in our eyes, enables artistic risk taking and discussion. We want to become a scene that gives context to each others works and creates a social, political and artistic discourse together.
*How Do We Work It is a new initiative of Berlin choreographers to meet, speak and reflect current working conditions in contemporary art in Berlin and internationally. We continued meeting after being once invited to the workshop "how do we work it” in the frame of the Uferstudios Life Long Burning Project. Rather than a group, How Do We Work It is a platform for anybody who is interested to share experiences, knowledge and ideas.
is a multipurpose space free for the use of anyone who sees fit to do something there. Initiated by HWWI the office is currently a 30sqm Atelier provided by and situated in the Uferstudios in Wedding (Badstr. 41a/Uferstr.23, Atelier 64) equipped with Internet, desks, chairs, coffee machine, water boiler and heating and will prospectively contain whatever you might want to contribute to the space.
The key can be picked up in the office of the Uferstudios. No prior reservation of the space is needed. So, it will always be a surprise whether and with whom you are sharing the space.
